About Stevie: A Trauma-Informed Somatic Therapist in Prairie Village, KS
My story of becoming a therapist in Kansas City, what somatic therapy has meant for me, and how I have created a space for healing.
I have been writing blogs for my website for over a year and a half now, but I have never formally introduced myself on this platform. I thought it was about time that I do that.
I’d love to tell you a bit about my trauma therapy background, how I came to be a somatic therapist, the environment I have created in my office in the Kansas City area, and what it is like to work with a therapist at Embodied Healing. So, if you’re interested in that sort of thing, let’s chat!
Stevie’s Journey to Becoming a Trauma-Informed Therapist in Kansas City
I actually studied Spanish as an undergraduate at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. I thought I wanted to do interpretation in hospitals or perhaps in the political realm, but then quickly realized that what I enjoyed most about speaking with others was actually building connections.
From there (after my husband and I decided to teach english in Spain for a bit), I got my Master’s in Social Work from Appalachian State University. I honestly still wasn’t sure if I wanted to work in public policy or go into micro work like individual therapy or case management. That changed after I worked for a domestic violence shelter in a small county in Appalachia. I fell in love with the work and was fascinated by helping people with trauma.
My husband and I moved back home to the Kansas City area, and I landed a job at the Family Conservancy, where I did in-home therapy for Spanish-speakers, working with parents with postpartum depression in Wyandotte County. What an experience that was! While I mainly utilized Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, I quickly began to realize that trauma was a huge reason why people were displaying symptoms of depression.
From there, I opened a private practice with two other therapists in Brookside, and it was then when I started to study trauma interventions like EMDR and Somatic Experiencing. In 2025, I opened the Embodied Healing Collective in Prairie Village, Kansas, providing somatic therapy and trauma therapy for those needing healing. This has been a long time coming and an absolute joy to be a part of.
What Is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is a body-based approach to trauma treatment that recognizes trauma is stored not just in our thoughts, but in our nervous system and physical body. Modalities like EMDR and Somatic Experiencing work with the body’s stress response to help release stored trauma and restore a felt sense of safety, rather than relying on talk alone.
Meet the Embodied Healing Team: Our Trauma-Informed Therapists
Because I can't do it alone and I value the different perspectives that other therapists bring, I have brought on two amazing trauma-informed therapists, Lauren Bradley and Kathryn Megee. They both bring their own life experiences, expertise, perspectives, and deeply compassionate and knowledgeable lenses to this work that is invaluable to the culture here at Embodied Healing in Kansas City.
Both Lauren and Kathryn are studying somatic therapy and are well-versed in areas such as, but not limited to:
Needless to say, I am immensely proud of the team I have built!

Our therapy spaces prioritize comfort, allowing you to choose where you sit, how much light is on in the space, and where you put your attention (we have fidgets, things to color with, or even different ways you can position your body so that you don’t have to make eye contact the whole session.) We want you to feel as comfortable as possible, because having choice is a very important corrective experience for those who have experienced trauma.
